What do I wear?
Riding equipment if you have it. If you have never ridden before don't worry- jeans and shoes or boots with a low heel are fine. We also have helmets and knee pads that you can borrow.
Do I need to know how to ride?
No, many of our members were total beginners before joining the club. Furthermore, polo requires a different style of riding to the traditional hunter/jumper/dressage methods, and it's easier to pick up! Saying that, it can greatly improve your horsemanship if you take part in any other riding disciplines.
What if I've played before?
We have training sessions and teams at a wide range of levels. If you have any questions about this feel free to email us or come visit us at the Fresher's Fair or email us.
What about insurance?
As soon as you join the club you will be covered to play in all of the university run lessons and chukkas. To play in university tournaments, you will need to purchase SUPA (Schools and Universities Polo Association) membership to be insured. This is £60 or £10 with HPA membership.
How do I join the club?
Please join the club during Fresher's Fair or through the SU website polo page.
How do I find out about lessons times?
Go to the LESSON BOOKING page or sign up to our email or facebook page. Sign ups will be posted on the SU page, usually the Sunday before the lesson. There is currently a list of lessons available to beginners and novices running until the end of October, which you will need to book via the SU website if you would like to take part.
Do I need to have my own horse?
No- Rugby Polo Club, Leadenham Polo Club, Inglesham Polo Club and JF Academy all provide us with horses to hire that suit any level.
What if I have my own polo pony?
A few of the members have their own horses which they play in university tournaments and keep them at a variety of clubs or yards or at home. For more details please get in touch with them or with our president, Emma Cheshire, so she can advise you accordingly.
How do I get to the club?
We can organise transport for everyone to get to and from their lessons and if you have your own car you can help with the transport and claim back mileage.
Can I just be a social member of the club?
Yes you can- just sign up as a social member of the club on the SU polo page and all the details of events will be sent to you via email as well as being posted on the calender.
Do you have socials?
Yes! We have a full social calendar throughout the year with barbecues at the polo yard, pub polo, nights at Rock City Crisis and other clubs/bars, rulebook with pizza nights, National Tournament parties and many other events.
How many people are in the polo club?
There were about 75 members last year - many of whom played on a regular basis.
How much does it cost?
See LESSON PRICING
Do I pay in advance?
As of this year, we will be implementing a pay before you play scheme. This is to ensure that everyone is on time and commits to playing or training on the specified day that they signed up for.
Do I need special equipment?
If you have it bring it, but we can supply everything-from mallets to ponies!
Are the teams mixed?
Yes
If I didn't join at the beginning of the year, am I too late?
Contact any of the committee members to find out more or go on to our facebook page to discover more information. It is never too late to join- we have had quite a few members that signed up at the beginning of the second semester and they were welcomed with open arms.
